This protein binds oxysterols, cholesterol, and ergosteterol (the yeast version of cholestreol). It presumably transorts sterols between membranes. The hydrophobic pocket of this protein binds sterols and the outside of this protein binds phosphatidylinositol-3-phosphate. Yeast cells have 7 oxysterol-binding proteins. Human cells have 12 oxysterol-binding proteins. The sterol-binding domains of all oxysterol-binding proteins are conserved.
