This module was designed to review and enhance the classsroom lectures by allowing you to manipulate protein models in real time.
Our intitial foray into the structure of proteins will begin with a tour of the secondary structural elements and the general visualization tools of proteins. From there we will visualize DNA, identify a binding motif and understand how a polymerase works. Our tour will continue with a globular protein, focusing on a classic enzyme family, the serine proteases. From there we will tour the second main classification of proteins, the fibrous proteins to see what is different about them.
The next stop will be several examples of membrane proteins. When these proteins cross the membranes they tend to break all of the normal protein structure rules. From there we will tour hemoglobin, the second structure solved by x-ray crystallography.
