Our second Faculty Institute introduced strategies for implementing more quantitative reasoning in the interdisciplinary modules.  This year’s topics include HIV and cancer.

On Monday, we introduced Excel,  explored data visualization,  and modeled tumor growth kinetics using Excel.

On Tuesday, we introduced HIV and explored data (Markham 1998) .

We used Biology Workbench to look at sequences, align sequences, draw unrooted and rooted trees, and consider our output.  We added nucleic acid by pasting sequences in FASTA format from a data set.

We also found sequences through NDJINN search by selecting specific search terms and databases such as GenBank and SwissProt.  We used BLASTN to look for nucleotide sequences similar to our search sequence.

We looked again at GapMinder to examine global implications of HIV/AIDS data.
