Super Computing 2003 Conference: Igniting Innovation
Host:
Location:
Phoenix, AZ
Date(s):
November 15, 2003 - November 18, 2003
Abstract/Description:
The SC2003 Education Program invites undergraduate faculty and K-12 teachers to spend four days engaged in hands-on workshops at the SC2003 Conference to learn about high performance computing and communications tools and resources appropriate for their classroom. Participants will learn about approaches to using modeling and visualization in the classroom, including numerical modeling, algebraic modeling, dynamic modeling systems, and agent modeling. ------------------------------------- Computational Science Tools/Methods (Monday) Biology Workbench (http ://workbench.sdsc.edu ) is an accessible computational interface useful for a range of bioinformatics activities. Database searching is integrated with access to a wide variety of analysis and modeling tools. BioQUEST (http://bioquest.org ) staff will introduce the Biology Workbench by exploring a series of introductory problem spaces designed for learning and teaching biology. ------------------------------------- Applications of Computational Science in Biology (Saturday) The activities in this session will emphasize the integration of computational tools with a pedagogy that promotes student problem solving and research. This approach involves identifying realistic, biologically rich problems that are best addressed using modeling, simulation, visualization and other computational approaches. Participants will have the opportunity to work with several tools and see how they are embedded into existing curriculum units.
