A Citrus Canker Problem Space
Introduction
Citrus canker is of current scientific and research interest
because of its deleterious effects on the citrus industry.
The pathogen, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv citri, originated in
Asia and has been eradicated from Florida twice in the 20th
century. However, in 1995 the current epidemic began in
dooryard trees in Miami and West Palm and in the intervening
time has wiped out more than 25% of Florida’s citrus
production capacity.
This problem is multidisciplinary and can engage students in
investigating host-pathogen relationships, host and pathogen
genetics and phylogenies, epidemiology of canker, disease
control methods, regulations related to the epidemic,
influence of weather factors on the spread of this disease,
and economic impact of citrus canker on world wide citrus
production.
