Brief Overview:

One of the first major tests of the USA endangered species act involved the near extinction of the Florida panther. Molecular phylogenetic analyses were used to study population genetic diverstiy in the Florida panther as well as the Rocky Mountain cougar or mountain lion. This lesson looks at the data and analyses done, and poses questions about not only the science, but also the politics and other aspects of this case.

Project Materials:

Puma/cougar DNA sequences taken from GenBank and organized by site of sample and date.
