The genome of Influenza A Virus consists of eight RNA fragments. If a host is simultaneously infected with multiple Influenza A viruses genetic recombination can occur. This can result in new strains. Influenza A Viruses can infect many different hosts including birds, swine, and humans. In 1918, a strain of Influenza A was responsible for a pandemic that killed upwards of 20 million people worldwide. The current project investigates the relationship between the 1918 Influenza A strain and strains obtained from other animals. Amino acid sequences of hemaggltinin and neuraminidase proteins were used for comparison.
