Brief Overview:

Venomous snakes generally possess 2 classes of toxins: hemolytic/proteolytic, and neurotoxins. This project investigated one particular hemolytic toxin, Atrolysin C. Our goals were twofold: to establish phylogenetic relationships based on amino acid sequences among various species and attempt to correlate the degree of toxicity with a particular version of the protein.

Project Materials:

GenBank, NCBI

Future Directions:

We'd like to explore the relationship between toxin structure and the ability of certain mammals and snakes to neutralize the toxin.
