Bioinformatics Education Dissemination: Reaching Out, Connecting and Knitting-together

About the BEDROCK Project

BEDROCK (Bioinformatics Education Dissemination: Reaching Out, Connecting, and Knitting-together) is a three-year NSF-funded project running from 2002-2005. Our goal is to introduce faculty and students to the concepts, tools, and data of evolutionary bioinformatics, and to its application to a broad spectrum of biological questions. To accomplish this goal, we meet with faculty from the life sciences, mathematics, and computer and library sciences at workshops and conferences around the country to share educational materials, assess their particular needs for support and additional materials, and help develop and field-test these materials. We also provide a dynamic web-based collection of educational resources and collaborative tools compiled from contributions from workshop participants and long-term collaborators.

Preparing and implementing new curricula is a task beyond any one individual, no matter how dedicated. At workshops, through follow-up, and in collaboration with professional societies, BEDROCK fosters a community of educators interested in incorporating inquiry-based approaches to bioinformatics into their own courses. This community enables us to connect people sharing a common research or pedagogical interest, and builds on both the knowledge of experienced bioinformatics educators and the enthusiasm and originality of those new to the field.

BEDROCK builds on the established pedagogical philosophy and academic community of the BioQUEST Curriculum Consortium.
